By four o'clock, the list on the kitchen table had become a record of things I had not done. I had opened a book, made coffee, watched the weather change and spoken to a friend for longer than either of us expected.
An afternoon without evidence
There was no finished project to point to. No before-and-after photograph. Nothing that would make a particularly good answer to the question of what I had been up to. And yet it had been a good day.
A day does not have to become a story to have been worth living.
I am used to treating free time as material to shape. A hobby, an errand, something learned. Those things matter, but so does the occasional stretch of time that is allowed to remain loose.
The list was still there on Monday. A few things were less urgent than they had looked. The rest got done. I would like to remember that the next time an empty afternoon starts to feel like a problem.

The conversation.
A different perspective is welcome. Keep it thoughtful and respectful.
